The associate scientist works as a critical team member of the ingredient and high growth markets group and the broader part of Implementation and Support group in Science and Technology. This position will also have primary responsibility for formulation of pet food products, engage in cost savings initiatives, engage in ingredient reliability discussions internal and external, and lead trouble shooting initiatives working with manufacturing plants. In addition this position will provide primary support for wet and dry product support, engage in cross functional interactions with procurement, quality, regulatory and network operations groups.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Support implementation of company’s technology goals by designing products from bench top to commercialization.

  • Lead or participate in technical or cross functional project teams.

  • Fundamental food science knowledge shall be applied for optimum product functionality.

  • Transform nutrient standards to optimum selection of ingredients to meet finished product functional, regulatory and cost standards.

  • Coordinate all documents that support the final formulation of the products developed

  • Establish routine stability studies and make recommendations for finished product shelf life.

  • Conduct biological and feeding tests to ensure product acceptability with the pet.

  • Partner with process engineers for synergy in product and process development.

  • Develop ingredient and finished product specifications.

  • Interpret sensory and consumer data to develop products that meet consumer and pet needs.

Basic qualifications include:

  • BS in Food Science and Technology related field with more than 3 years’ of relevant work experience designing products in the food industry

  • Demonstrated expertise in formula development, stability studies, understanding of statistical analysis, data interpretation, and establishment of ingredient and finished product specifications

  • Experience in basic food unit operations and impact on product functionality

Preferred qualifications include:

  • MS in Food Science

  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience in product design and development of preferably single source nutrition products in the food industry

  • Working knowledge of nutritional science

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills; ability to communicate and influence and thrive in a cross-functional environment. Strong analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills.
